There’s not always a clear line between good and evil in HBO’s fantasy drama, Game of Thrones.
Sure, sometimes the heroes are fairly obvious. Jon Snow is a heroic figure. Robb Stark was a tragic hero.
Other times, the good guys are a little less noble. Tyrion Lannister is a character we root for, but he did strangle his former lover to death. And is Varys “the Spider” a hero? If Arya goes through with her assassin training and is tasked with killing someone we like and care about, will she still be a hero?
What about Littlefinger? He’s obviously not a hero, but he isn’t entirely a villain, either. He did love Catelyn Stark, even if he helped burn down everything Catelyn loved. Stannis was a cruel man, but he used the ends to justify the means, and was the only claimant to the Iron Throne who believed in the threat from the North. Up until he killed his own daughter, he was a complicated hero, his ruthlessness itself part of his heroism.
In the far North, the Children of the Forest helped Bran and his little fellowship, but we learned last week that they’re also responsible for the creation of the White Walkers.
